Start with an end in mind (Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits). First of all you need to set the goal about what you want to achieve through your blog. Different purpose of the blog would have different rules as well. Naming personal blog, corporate blog and niche blog which content of certain topic would also be different. In other saying, you need to know what do you want to explore through your blog, how do you want to write it and who do you expect to visit your blog and read your writing.

Consequence of goal setting is that you also have to determine indicators of success and monitor progress.

For example, for a site, I set the success indicator (in 1 year) as follows:

• 3000 hits per day. Niche who have worked on a larger space, but the range I specify as the minimum target.

• $500 per month. Using affiliate programs, direct advertising and AdSense.

• Holding page # 1 (top 10) for the main keywords, and top 5 for key words second and third layers (long tail keywords).

• Established community (forum) with at least 250-500 active members.

The purpose of the above is likely to be achieved; it is the minimum target (traffic and revenue) can I expect if you do it fulltime.

How do you measure success? For some items – such as AdSense and keyword ranking, your goal may be very different, depending on how competitive your niche target and how much daily traffic that could be expected from the key words are targeted. Position # 1 for popular keywords can produce 10,000 hits per day with ease, but the competition is definitely fierce.

You must do keyword research and competitive analysis before we can determine indicators of success.

If indicators of success have been determined, perform monthly monitoring (for traffic and search ranking tools I will show it). If there is no visible progress every month, then you must make an evaluation and find out where the problem is.
